Vitamin Deficiency: A Potential Parasitic Connection?

Vitamin deficiency raises an important question: are we truly lacking nutrients, or is something stealing them before our bodies ever get the chance to use them? Across decades of research, parasites have been documented as nutrient thieves, consuming or blocking the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and proteins that humans depend on for growth, immunity, and survival. Children once labeled as simply “deficient” were later found to have intestinal worms competing for their food, draining iron, vitamin A, folate, and other essential nutrients faster than their bodies could replenish them. In many regions of Africa and Asia, this pattern is so common that malnutrition and parasitic infection are considered inseparable; one fuels the other until the body begins to wither under the strain.

When parasites invade the digestive system, they don’t just take nutrients, they damage the intestinal lining, interfere with absorption, and leave behind toxic metabolic wastes that burden the liver and immune system. Over time, children become thin, fatigued, and stunted. Adults lose strength, mental clarity, and resilience. In severe cases, especially among children, the body becomes so overwhelmed that organ systems begin to shut down. Soil‐transmitted worms and schistosomes affect more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, and in communities without access to sanitation or routine deworming, parasites thrive while their hosts slowly weaken.

Global health data shows that undernutrition and parasitic infection reinforce each other in a dangerous cycle. Undernourished children are more susceptible to infections, and infections worsen nutrient loss. Iron deficiency alone accounts for a significant portion of the global parasitic disease burden, and nearly half of all deaths in children under five are linked to undernutrition, with parasites playing a major role in high‐burden regions or areas with high disease rates. Today, an estimated 733 million people across the world — children, mothers, and adults — live in a state of undernourishment, many of them in areas where parasitic infections are widespread and chronically untreated.

Many countries respond to this crisis through routine deworming programs. The global Neglected Tropical Disease initiative has delivered 1.7 billion treatments worldwide, the the US historically funded at around $114 million annually to WHO(world health organization,) often providing life‐saving medication for as little as fifty cents per child to other countries while they did not provide the citizens of their own country with this luxury. Yet funding has dropped significantly in recent years, leaving millions at risk the United States has never invested in mass parasitic treatment programs for its own population. Instead, U.S. involvement has largely focused on research, surveillance, and guideline development through agencies like the CDC and NIH, and through participation in WHO‐aligned mandates. The last time the U.S. funded a large‐scale domestic parasite eradication effort was in 1909, when John D. Rockefeller donated $27 million to eliminate hookworm in the America; a parasite that once caused widespread anemia, lethargy, and developmental delays. Today, a single deworming pill in the U.S. can cost up to $1,000, creating a stark contrast between domestic pricing and global outreach efforts that treat children for pennies.

Parasites are far more common than most people realize, affecting humans and animals alike. In the vast world of microbes, humans are not at the top of the food chain; parasites feed on us just as easily as they feed on livestock. They steal vital nutrients, disrupt digestion, weaken immunity, and leave behind toxic waste that the body must struggle to eliminate. Left unchecked, they thrive while their hosts slowly become malnourished, fatigued, and vulnerable. Understanding this connection between nutrient deficiency and parasitic infection shifts the conversation from “Are we getting enough vitamins?” to “Is something preventing our bodies from using them at all?”
